Cristina transitioned from volunteering as a La Leche League Leader and teaching in the classroom to serving the wider community using her expertise in acupressure therapy. After battling unexplained fatigue and depression, she explored alternative options and found an acupressure style called Jin Shin Jyustu (JSJ). Through JSJ, she experienced a shift in her energy and well-being. This inspired her to deeply explore the world of JSJ Acupressure and become a certified practitioner with her own business, Ancient Flow Therapy, here in Gainesville and the surrounding area.
- How long have you lived in the Gainesville/Alachua County area? - Born in Costa Rica, I remain connected with my roots through language, family, and visits. Raised in Gainesville since 1977, from Baby Gator to UF Gator grad (Cultural Anthropology/Women’s Studies), I’m proud to call Gainesville home.
- What was your previous business experience? - Before opening Ancient Flow Therapy, I did not have any business experience. I worked as a teacher until I found my love for Jin Shin Jyutsu and acupressure. Honestly, it was wanting to share this healing art that was the impetus for starting a business, especially as the only one practicing this modality in North Central Florida.
- What are the unique features of your business or services? My practice, Ancient Flow Therapy (AFT), is based on proven, time-honored healing techniques, such as acupressure, meaning no needles as I use my fingers. AFT enhances your body’s innate ability to heal. I work with clients to help them feel more balanced, grounded, and energized. AFT compliments modern medicine and partners with your medical team to provide the best support for your physical and emotional needs. This style of bodywork cultivates self-care and nurturing even for those considered in good health.
- What changes have you made in the past year to your business, products, services, or the customers you target? - In the past year, I’ve begun offering public and private workshops to support others in self-care and easy-to-do acupressure. To accommodate a broader demographic, I also expanded my service offerings to allow for multiple session lengths and package options. To address the cost of operations and continuing education, I raised my prices for the first time in 8 years.
- What do you enjoy most about GAWN? - I love connecting with other members and learning how they serve our community. I am encouraged and supported in many of our group interactions. This is why GAWN, which aims to champion and promote women in business, is so powerful.
- What advice would you give to someone starting in business? - I’ve learned that it takes lots of time to learn the business side of things. Getting lots of support, and asking for help to keep moving forward, is so important.
- Personal info you want to share, include other organizations or community involvement -I’m an active member of professional associations including GAWN and the Florida State Massage Therapy Association (FSMTA). From 2010- 2022, I volunteered with the GHS Marching Band and substitute taught while developing AFT. My journalism teacher husband and I have three young adult kids. I’ve lived in a few other places and love to travel, but Gainesville is home, where my garden, dog, and cat “keep me on my toes”.
