Please join us on Wednesday, July 19th from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM at the Sweetwater Branch Inn for our monthly luncheon.
This month's speaker is Louise Newman.
Louise Newman is a specialist in U.S. Women’s History, and Associate Professor of U.S. History at the University of Florida, where she has taught for approximately twenty-five years. She is author of White Women’s Rights: The Racial Origins of Feminism in the United States (Oxford, 1999) as well as editor of Men’s Ideas/Women’s Realities: Popular Science, 1870-1915 (Pergamon Press, 1985). She has written articles on the history of women’s rights, race and imperialism in the 19th century, and the history of second-wave feminism in the 20th century. Do men and women speak differently at work or in a business setting? Do they use their bodies differently when they speak? And even if they are trained to speak the same, are they heard differently by male and female listeners? This talk will be a guided discussion, informed by academic research in a variety of fields (business, sociolinguistics, gender studies) but drawing mostly from participants’ own experiences in the work place. And our focus will be on discussing the strategies women often use at work to counter gender and other forms of bias.
